The stamps were stolen between May 6-8, 2020, while on their way back to their owner in the United States, after being expertized by the Vincent Graves Greene Philatelic Research Foundation’s Expert Committee (Greene Foundation).
The Foundation says the theft occured while the material was in the custody of FedEx Corporation, somewhere in the southeastern United States. The theft was reported to FedEx and to Hugh Wood Insurance.
The stamps are all identified by their individual number in The Canadian Revenue Stamp Catalogue (a.k.a. the Van Dam Catalogue), the leading authority on Canadian and British North America Revenues.
Collectors should catalog their collections and have them appraised, so a policy can be purchased with the proper amount of coverage for circumstances such as theft, fire and other unforeseen circumstances.
APS Director of Expertizing Gary Wayne Loew stressed the importance of insurance for philatelists, saying: "The philatelic community – collectors, dealers, and expertizing authorities – go to great lengths to ensure the safety of stamps. But when the unexpected occurs, as was reported here by the Vincent Graves Greene Philatelic Research Foundation, philatelic insurance proves to be the additional layer of security that all philatelists require."
Hugh Wood Insurance is APS-approved and provides the APS Stamp Insurance plan, which is specifically designed by stamp collectors, for stamp collectors.
The Greene Foundation reviews its best practices regularly to ensure improvements in the delivery of its services, while the investigation of the theft continues.
